Tips for new bloggers from people who blog

Tips for new bloggers
I asked the private facebook group, for fibro bloggers,
'What is one tip that you would give to a new blogger?'
Here are their responses:
(To visit their facebook pages click on their names and to visit their blogs click on the blog title next to ther name.)

Katie Clark from Pain FULLY Living :
Make sure to know your purpose. It's easy to get overwhelmed.
Shelley Clark Smith from Chronic Mom :
Don't do it!
Haha
My serious answer: Don't focus immediately on trying to make money, focus on building your brand and audience first
Rachel Barclift from Once Upon a Fog Blog
I would tell them to thoroughly research which writing blog platform is best for their future blogs. It’s best to take your time, look at all your options, and reviews before deciding on the one you’re going to use.
Carol Homer from InvisblyMe
While a niche is often recommended, don’t feel you’ve got to box yourself in. If you want to spread your wings a little and open up your content then do it; it’s your blog, your space, do what you feel happy and comfortable with.
Melissa Reynolds from Melissa vs Fibromyalgia
Learn first. Make good decisions from the beginning. I spent years fluffing about. Take a good intro blogging course to figure out the first must dos. And then add things one at a time. And for the sake of your energy and sanity pick one social media platform to master first.
Alisha Nurse from The Invisible F
My advice for new bloggers: Some say imitation is the sincerest form of flattery, but I say DO YOU. Make it yours. Carve out a style and create a voice that are 100 percent YOU. Being yourself and bringing that authenticity to your work is incredibly important. No point in trying to be someone else. Only you, can do YOU, like you.
Bettina Bier from Me, Myself and I
I would tell them. "Post what you like and feel good with. Don't think about what others might like or not. It's your blog. Write it with all your heart and the people will love it. Because it's you"
Beverley Dickinson from Blooming Mindfulness
I'd say add other people who blog about the same things you do the community aspect is so important and a great way to support others
Terri Sutula from Reclaiming Hope
Take the time to develop your avatar - your ideal reader - and write to that person. By doing this, you can write what your ideal reader wants to read and not worry about trying to please everyone. We can't ever please everybody, and having an avatar helps you realize that the people who aren't interested in what you're writing may just not be 'your person.'
Donna Gregory Burch from Fed Up With Fatigue
Focus on building your email list. Google, Facebook, Pinterest, etc. constantly change their algorithms. Depending on them for traffic is a dangerous game b/c one bad algorithm change and poof, your traffic is gone! In contrast, you OWN your email list and are in complete control of it. An email list is also the best way to create repeat traffic and reader relationships. It's easier to keep a subscriber than to keep trying to find new visitors for your site
Lynne Said from The Healing Within Fibromyalgia
Write what you feel passionate about some will like it some won't and that doesn't matter. Be consistent this has been one big lesson that I've learned the hard way. x

I hope you found these helpful and if you did please share this post using the social media buttons below. We would love to read your suggestions for new bloggers in the comments below.

Tips for new Bloggers

be a successful blogger

Tips for new Bloggers from Amazon Associates

For some, the idea to start a blog can come spontaneously, while for others, it’s a longstanding personal wish. While some simply jump in at the deep end and start blogging, others spend a lot of time thinking about whether they possess the necessary skillset to succeed. To help you get started, here’s a rundown of the skills a blogger will need to develop over time in order to create a successful, compelling and ultimately profitable blog.

IN THIS ARTICLE, YOU WILL LEARN:
  • Which skills you will need to develop to become a successful blogger
  • Which skills would be a useful bonus
  • Some tips for a successful approach to blogging
Consider who, what and why

There’s more than one kind of blogger. As a blogger, think in depth about your target group – the ‘who’, the topic of your blog – the ‘what’, and your own ambitions – the ‘why’, will all help you decide what skills you’ll require to be successful.

Enjoy Writing

Actually enjoying the writing process is surely the number-one important skill every blogger must have. Being a blogger means to regularly compose articles – and if you wake up in the morning desperate to get to your keyboard, then you have what it takes.

Write Well

What it actually means to ‘write well’ can vary from person to person, and from subject to subject. For example, the way an author for a financial blog approaches writing is largely incompatible with the way a blogger for a gaming site writes. It’s important that the reader’s needs are catered for, and that your articles are enjoyable. This doesn’t mean you have to be a world-class author; but it does mean you should always concentrate on using the right language and the correct spelling and grammar.

Do Your Research

Knowing how to do your research is extremely important when it comes to writing about topics outside of your own thoughts and experiences. Being an effective researcher means being able to look at something from all possible angles and constructing convincing and compelling arguments.

Be Disciplined

If you daydream that starting a blog will make you famous and successful overnight, you’ll be disappointed. Attracting a sizable and engaged audience for your blog will only happen gradually - which means persistence and patience is key. You'll also need discipline: even though it might feel as though there’s no time to write, adding new content regularly is very important for maintaining your blog’s momentum.

Pick the Right Subject

If you’re planning to dedicate a significant amount of time over the coming years to blogging about a specific topic, then make absolutely sure it’s one you’re passionate about. Otherwise, you risk losing interest and will find it increasingly tough to get the work done.

Improve Your Knowledge

You really don’t have to be a leading expert on your chosen topic, but you should definitely not be new to the subject, either. Readers will quickly notice if you don’t know what you’re talking about. Keep up to date with your topic and over time, you’ll naturally build up know-how on your subject – and this will make it easier to write about.

Be Open

You don’t have to love being the center of attention, but being open to new experiences and relationships in the online community can be extremely helpful. Presenting yourself as open and approachable means you'll forge new business relationships as well as nurturing a dedicated readership. Knowing how to treat others is important, and being provocative and confrontational is often a counter-productive strategy in the long run.

Know Yourself…and Others

Even though your experiences and opinions should inform your writing, it’s also important to take on board other peoples’ perspectives and ways of thinking – they might have something constructive to say. Also, be mindful of your moral position both in your writing and in business, and consider the consequences of your actions. Established bloggers attract no end of dubious offers to make money; so always question the motives of others and maintain a clear conscience in your dealings.

Bonus Skills

While none of the following skills are an absolute necessity, developing expertise in some of the following areas can make your life as a blogger a lot easier:
  • Technical Knowledge: If you know your way around web technology, then hosting and content management will become much easier and quicker – you’ll save time and money by not having to depend on external sources.
  • HTML/CSS: If you know a little about HTML and CSS – the language of formatting and styling web pages – you’ll be able to independently refine and redesign your blog as it develops. Investing a little time learning these skills will mean small changes and optimizations can be made immediately, without the need to pay anyone to do the work.
  • Search Engine Optimization (SEO): Google and other search engines are constantly refining and improving their ability to recognize worthwhile content, so you can go far as a blogger by simply concentrating on the quality of your posts. Nevertheless, SEO still plays a significant role and the value of making subtle alterations to your writing approach to improve your visibility and ranking on the web shouldn’t be underestimated. A poorly optimized blog is a missed opportunity.
  • Social Media: Understanding how to use social media to your advantage to distribute content and communicate to your readers will work to your advantage. This will not only increase your site traffic, but will help build that relationship with your readers. If you aren’t familiar, spend some time looking into ways this can be done and experimenting with various social media platforms.
  • Networking: Being broadly connected will make a huge difference to the success of your blog. Think about effective ways you can reach out to other content providers and potential business partners. Learn how to network both online and in person.
  • Imagery: Images are a powerful tool for a blog writer, and help make posts look more engaging to a reader. For some blogs, such as food blogs, professional photos of the various stages of a recipe have become a necessity. Familiarize yourself with image processing to optimize and enhance the images on your blog, and even learning how to take a decent photograph yourself, are skills that will benefit you in the long run.
Learn By Doing

With blogging, every day is an opportunity to learn something new – either about the subject you’re blogging about, or the process of blogging itself. Remember that the more blogging you do, the better at it you’ll become – practice most definitely makes perfect.

The best advice we can offer is to dare to try new things – and never to stop practicing with the tools you already have access.

Can you start a blog for free in 2021?

Hi, future blogger,

maybe you are thinking of starting a blog and you are in that learning and investigating phase, and you are wondering about the cost of building your blog and hosting your own blog.

I'm here to tell you that money isn’t much of an issue when starting your blog. There are many ways you can get started blogging that are absolutely free.

Blogging help

It was in 1997 that the word "blog" was created when John Barger called his site a “weblog”. Blogging has come a long way and even today, 23 years later blogging can still be a free hobby.

Tumblr,  Blogger and Medium, are all free places you can blog, very easily, right now.

These platforms are simple to use and great places to try out your interest in blogging and see if it's right for you. There is also WordPress.com, Wix, Jimdo and Weebly.

It's important to find a platform that meets your needs so I have done a comparision below.

Points of difference that may help you decide between the free platforms:

Tumblr:
  • Has a built-in audience: The chance to be featured in front of their 360+ million bloggers.
  • You don’t have control over formatting but it is extremely easy to use.
  • Data released in 2018 says almost half of the bloggers are between the ages of 16 and 24. These users are interested in short blog posts, images and videos and you will only get interaction if you appeal to that demographic.
  • Is available in 18 languages but main users are from the US.
  • Has a wide variety of free themes, but those who want to change their page can pay between 9 and 49 dollars for premium themes.
Blogger:
  • Easy to use with a simple layout. Just type your content, add photos and publish.
  • You can edit HTML and add widgets to your blog layout, which allows you to make your blog look how you want: many other free platforms do not offer this.
  • You need a Google account to use it as it is a Google service.
  • According to Blogger’s Terms of Service, they can suspend your blog at any time without prior notice. (This has happened to me!)
  • You can create up to 100 blogs per account. (that's blogs, not posts)
Medium:
  • You can blog and grow a following but you don't really have a blog.
  • Little customization — your blog will look like every other Medium blog.
  • Has a built-in audience: The chance to be featured in front of their 85+ million readers.
  • No monetization is allowed
WordPress.com:
  • You can call them 24/7 on their Customer Support Phone Number Helpline.
  • They have short video tutorials to teach the basics, such as customizing your site.
  • Doesn’t allow you to monetize your blog with Google AdSense or affiliate marketing.
  • Switching to another blogging platform can be expensive because you’ll have to pay for site redirection even after switching.
  • To add a custom domain name you’ll have to upgrade to a premium plan.
Wix:
  • Wix offers a limited free plan.
  • To add a custom domain name you’ll have to upgrade to a paid plan.
  • Hundreds of great template designs.
  • Your website will display Wix-branded ads.
Jimdo
  • You can build 5 pages only eg About page, Contact page.
  • Selection of images to use on your site.
  • To add a custom domain name you’ll have to upgrade
Weebly:
  • Offers a free limited plan for beginners.
  • To add a custom domain name you’ll have to upgrade to a paid plan.
You can start practicing your writing skills, and your consistency in blogging with a free blog. Try to publish a new blog post regularly, at least once a week.

You can see if communicating your thoughts and expressing your feelings is what you really want to do without spending any money.

Just head over to one of those sites, set up a free account, and you can start blogging straight away.

NAMING YOUR BLOG
You need to think about the name of your blog first though:
What will you call your blog? Is it a name that is easy to spell and remember?
Will you use your own name for your blog? Many people do this and it is a good idea if you are not sure of your main focus or if you are well known in the area you will be blogging in or if you are thinking of doing consulting of some kind.
Consider how will you feel telling someone the name of your blog?

where to get free images

WHERE TO GET FREE IMAGES
Once you start your blog you can even get great images to use for free.

We all know that great blogs use interesting images and so I wanted to help you get these photos for free too. I recommend sharing one or two photos with each blog post, that you write, and there are many ways to get them for free. I like:

Unsplash
Pexels
Pixabay
Library of Congress
PicMonkey and Canva are image enhancing sites that supplies free photos

If you are looking for a place to express your thoughts and have no intention of trying to make money, then a free blogging platform can be right for you.

GET A PROFESSIONAL LOOK
Free is wonderful but it doesn't really look professional so if you want to build a business out of your blog and make money blogging I recommend some of the paid options like Bluehost. If you're not sure whether to use a free or paid hosting provider to get started here’s why you should consider a paid hosting provider:

  • With a free site there may be lack of support if something goes wrong. For example there is barely any support with blogger, just a forum of people who use it.
  • When you go with free sites, you do not own your site. You can lose a blog you have put time and effort into. This has happened to me with zoomshare and also blogger. Believe me it is devastating.
  • With a free site you have the limitations on how your site looks and functions, depending on the blogging platform.
  • Most free services have limits on how you can monetize. For example no adds are allowed on WordPress.com and their adds may be shown.
  • Changing to a paid service later on can be a hassle and cost money

If you have a long term idea of making some money from your blog most experts recommend starting with an affordable hosting platform. My recommendation is Bluehost as I use it myself, on some of my blogs, it has great support, you get a domain name and automatic WordPress Install and Updates.

You can sign up right now and launch your website within minutes. You get easy WordPress installation and a FREE domain name for a year.

They also have a Special intro offer and 30-day money-back guarantee if you go through this link.

BLUEHOST make it incredibly easy and fast to get a new website up and running with WordPress. I wish I had known about them when I first started a blog.

You can use your Bluehost account to host multiple domains - so there is no need to pay more for hosting if you want to start another blog. Also, they provide outstanding customer service, 24/7. I highly recommend using Bluehost for your first website, and you can get started easily now.

Disclosure: When you purchase hosting using my Bluehost discount link, they compensate me, which helps me keep Fibro Blogger Directory free of charge to you.

Where to find FREE images

Where to find free images

We all know that our posts need images, especially if we want to be shared on social media and who doesn't want to be shared?
No one will share your post on facebook or Pinterest unless it has an image.
So no more excuses for not having a great photo even if you are not a great photographer because... here are over 15 places to get wonderful, free images online, right now, today. They are all free to use on your blog, website or on social media.

Let's start with the ones I use, in no particular order:

Unsplash
These are quite artistic and unusual in my opinion. Also high quality.  They seem to add new photos every day and also you don't see the same photos you find everywhere there. Here is an example from Felipe Dias ...

Where to find free images

Has been around for ages, since 1996 in fact, when Michael Connors created it to be a free image exchange for creatives and teachers to share and use in their work. All the photos are free to download and use whether it is commercial or not.  You do have to join to download the images.

An easy to follow guide on How Often To Share On Social Media

An easy to follow guide on How Often To Share On Social Media

How often to post on SOCIAL MEDIA is different depending on the social media site.

I personally share 2 or 3 times a day on facebook and about the same on google + and more on twitter. (What a shame google + has gone now, I use to get lots of interested readers coming to my posts from there. It just shows how quickly things can change on the internet.)

I was sharing 5 times a day on twitter as @FibroBloggers and did a survey of my followers to find that 86% of them wanted more tweets. Please keep in mind that it is probably less from individual bloggers.

Recent research shows that it is optimal to post twice daily on Facebook, three times daily on Twitter, and 5 times daily or more on Pinterest. Do you agree with this? What is your experience?

PINTEREST: While Pinterest is more of a search engine than a social media site it has been included here. Top brands on Pinterest experience rapid growth by posting multiple times per day. I have found that now I am posting regularly on Pinterest 5 times a day or more Pinterest is one of the top sites sending visitors to my posts. Many people in Fibro Blogger Directory say the same.

TWITTER: Recent research has shown that tweeting more than 3 times causes your engagement to decrease slightly.

FACEBOOK: You can post twice per day before likes and comments then begin to drop off.

How to promote your blog post

How to promote your blog post

Sometimes we are shy to sing our own praises and promote ourselves.

When you put so much time and effort into your blog this is not a sensible way to be.

Just for fun, I am suggesting we give the following a try...

Why not see how far you can boost one, just one, post?

WHY? - To drive traffic to your post and build awareness of your blog.

HOW?
- Pick a post of yours, that you think is really good, and promote it like mad.

Get out of your comfort zone and share it more than you usually would.

Here are my suggestions:
  • Share it on all your social media more than once.
  • Send an email about it to your email list.
  • Write to someone who you think may be interested in publishing it eg The Mighty.
  • Share it on the Sunday Sharathon in our private facebook group.
  • Share it all again...
  • Check your numbers and see what impact you have made... decide was it worth it and will you do this again??
I think you may find that you get many more views to your post than you normally do if you spend at least as much time promoting your posts as you do writing them.

I hope you use these strategies to increase visibility, engagement, and ultimately drive more traffic to your blog. Let me know what happens when you do promote your blog post in these ways.

Assessing an increase in viewers is easy and straightforward, but building awareness of your blog can be more challenging to measure. However, with the right strategies in place, you can improve visibility and attract more readers.

It would be great to hear back from you, in the comments, if these tactics work for you.

Using Pinterest to get traffic to your blog

Since creating this video Pinterest has made changes to its algorithm. So what does that mean to you?
1. Pinning every day is still worthwhile. (or whatever you can do consistently.)
2. Pinning to every folder is no longer appropriate. Pinterest now appreciates "Fresh" pins and sharing the same pin to many accounts may now mean you are penalized by Pinterest.

WHAT IS A FRESH PIN?
That is a term that is used by content creators on Pinterest to mean a brand new never before seen pin. You can create a fresh pin or even revamp an old pin to make it fresh. You can either change the image or the font. If you are changing the font you can change the actual words or the font that you use eg change Helvetica to Georgia etc.

Below is the video which takes you 4 basic and relevant points.
Please ignore the 5th point as it is now considered spam by Pinterest!
"Duplicate content will be shown less and possibly considered as spam" according to Pinterest Partnership Manager, Lucy Matthews, who is one of their representatives.

TRANSCRIPT: Today I am talking about Pinterest for bloggers.

PINTEREST is not a social media platform where we talk to others and connect...

it is actually a search engine just like Google!

It's a free way to drive traffic to your blog or website.

You can use your pins to drive traffic to your opt-in pages or a specific post.

So how can we do this?

Pinterest has the smart feed which rewards people who are better pinners. It now displays the best pins not the newest pins. So how can we be one of those better pinners and get seen by more people?

1. Have a high re-pin rate.
When you pin something, Pinterest is looking to see how many times that pin is re-pinned. Basically, it thinks that if it is re-pinned more than once then people like it.

2. Use keywords.
Pinterest is looking for keywords just the same as Google, so you need to use keywords on Pinterest as well. It helps if you know what people are searching for in your niche. When you create a pin in the Description box put the 3 or 4 keywords or keyword phrases that people might use if they were searching for that pin.

3. PIN every day.
Yes every single day... even if it's just once a day.

4. PIN in your niche.
You need to appeal to your audience. Forget house design and flowers except if that is your niche. Create boards in your niche.

This is the content of the video that is now irrelevant from 2021...
(5. PIN to multiple boards.
Pin it to every board of yours that is relevant to that pin.
Start by pinning it to your main board and then re-pin it to your other boards.
Hopefully that will get some re-pins and more traffic.
I suggest creating your main board to be titled after your blog.
It is important to pin the 1 image to multiple boards because your followers may not be following every single board of yours. )

Look out for my other PINTEREST posts:

What is a pillar post?

What is a pillar post?

This is where you can learn all about Pillar Posts...

If you are a blogger you definitely need to not only know what a pillar post is you need to write at least one and probably 5 to get more traffic to your blog.

A pillar post is the type of information that your readers would search for in google.

A pillar post is a post that holds up or supports your blog.

It is a post that you are really proud of and that you are extremely happy to share.

It is usually a longer, rather than a shorter post.

It should be an in depth post covering one specific core topic. (Think about having 3 core topics)

It should use a specific keyword or related group of keywords.

It should be thorough.

It should ideally be about the core principles of your blog.

It could answer questions that your readers want answered.

It should be relevant and useful to your readers.

It could explain a theory or concept.

It could be problem solving.

It should be an evergreen post, meaning that it stays relevant overtime.

It must be your own unique work and hopefully have some unique ideas.

It would be amazing if it was groundbreaking or not found on many other blogs.

What is a pillar post?

WHY IS A PILLAR POST IMPORTANT FOR YOUR BLOG?
Pillar posts, or cornerstone posts, as they are often called, will help your blog be found in search.
They help people understand what your blog is all about.
Help you become an authority in your niche.
Also they are great to share so other people know what your blog is all about.

GOOD NEWS
You may already have some posts on your blog that, with a little bit of work, can easily become great pillar posts. If you can answer the question better than anyone else your post will become worthy of linking to.

HEADLINES AND KEYWORDS
Choose your relevant Keywords and place them in the title and in the first paragraph.
Here is a FREE keyword shortcut from Neil Patel called UberSuggest.  Just type in one keyword and UberSuggest will generate more words for you to consider. You don't even have to add your email.

WHO CALLED IT A PILLAR POST?
In 2006 that great Australian/Canadian blogger Yaro Starak used the term in an article on Problogger

Write at least five major “pillar” articles. A pillar article is usually a tutorial style article aimed to teach your audience something. Generally they are longer than 500 words and have lots of very practical tips or advice. This article you are currently reading could be considered a pillar article since it is very practical and a good “how-to” lesson. This style of article has long term appeal, stays current (it isn’t news or time dependent) and offers real value and insight. The more pillars you have on your blog the better.
