Fibromyalgia Product of the Week - water exercise book

Fibromyalgia Product of the Week
I often get asked about exercise and how is it possible to start and maintain exercise when you live with chronic pain. We are told time and time again to exercise and the importance of exercise and some ignorant people suggest that our fibromyalgia would be cured if we just did so.

Only people who live with chronic pain understand the dilemma of how to pace ourselves without increasing pain. It is a very fine line.

I have tried many things to increase my fitness levels since my diagnosis. In the past, before Fibro, I was a dancer and a dance teacher so I use to love to move. Dancing now is not an option. Too many weak muscles and too easy to fall and have an injury.

I have discovered with trial and error, what works for me and I hope it works for you too.

Walking and jogging and exercising in water. YES! I even jog now, quite fast and for 15 minutes which actually gets my heart rate up. This is increasing my general fitness plus it feels fantastic to do this kind of movement again. I didn't start with jogging though I built up to that.

Actually when I started at hydrotherapy classes I had difficulty pacing myself. You can read about it here if you are interested. Since then I have learnt to really pull back, go slow and increase my movements in tiny increments. My balance has increased which is really important as far as not falling over. I am not fatigued all the time. I really look forward to exercising now.

This book is really helpful in explaining how to exercise in the water when you live in chronic pain. It has lots of helpful illustrations with all of the elements that go into a water exercise program appropriate for fibromyalgia: warm-ups, stretching, aerobic exercises, strength exercises, balance exercises, exercises focusing on the abdominals, neck exercises, cool downs.

Fibro product of the week

Fibro Product of The Week
Living with Fibromyalgia and all of it's pain, fatigue and other symptoms is tough.

In an attempt to ease the burden for Fibro fighters we have asked all of those in our Fibromyalgia community to share what products have helped them most and I will be sharing them here each week at Fibro Product of the Week. I hope you find this helpful and don't forget to have a look at the other products featured.

I was so happy when I found this helpful little item. An Alaska Bear Natural Silk Sleep Mask. It really is silky smooth and not like any other eye mask I have experienced. My sister gave it to me for my birthday which might seem like a strange and practical gift but for someone who suffers from headaches and migraines it is amazing. She does too so she understands.

The thing about it is that it's so soft, actually super soft and has complete blackout.

So why use a sleep mask if you have Fibromyalgia?
Many people with Fibro have sleep problems including difficulty getting into REM sleep.
The hormone Melatonin regulates the day-night cycle of the human body and controls the recovery phases during the sleep. For the production of this hormone, the human body requires sufficient darkness. Lightness prevents the production of Melatonin. Even a little light caused by your digital alarm clock can be a disturbance. A good sleeping mask however will naturally help you increase melatonin levels and increase REM sleep.

Fibromyalgia Product of The Week

Fibromyalgia Product of The Week
The products recommended here every week are recommended by people who have Fibromyalgia. This week the product is something to make your time on the computer a little bit more comfortable a wrist support. I particularly like this one as it is made of soft and breathable memory foam. It's such a small thing but it makes a huge difference to your computer time especially if, like many people who have fibro (like me), you have carpal tunnel syndrome. This is a 2 piece set which comes with a wrist rest pad that goes across the front of the computer and a separate mouse wrist rest support.

I use both of these for work, as I use a desktop at work. They do not provide any type of wrist rest pads and my wrists were constantly hurting. I ordered these and BAM no more problems. I'm actually using this right now as I'm typing and I love how SOFT they are. MANDA PANDA
Great Size! I always seem to slide off other mouse pads of this type. Above the wrist pad, the shape is a large circle which gives you extra room to move around on the sides. Also, the bottom is grippy but can still be moved. My other mouse pads seemed to suction to the desk so they were hard to move around. I definitely recommend this.  MICHELLE
The good news is that this product is also the number 1 Amazon Best Seller in it's category. Not that you have to purchase it on Amazon (you can probable get it at your local electronic store) but if you do purchase it through the link below Fibro Blogger Directory receives a small percentage of the sale at no extra cost to you.

Fibromyalgia Product of the Week

Fibromyalgia Product of the Week

This week we are talking about weighted blankets thanks to a suggestion from Kim who has fibromyalgia and also restless leg syndrome. Kim has written an article about these special blankets and recommends a lovely family run business to purchase them from at her blog.

Here I wanted to explain a little about the benefits of weighted blankets.
I first heard about weighted blankets, as a therapy tool for children with sensory concerns, years ago when I worked with children with learning difficulties. (At this time we use to get heavy damp towels and place one on each of the child's shoulders to calm them down!) Things have moved on.

Apparently many parents have seen the benefits for their children in the calming effect and improvement in mood and sleep of weighted blankets and also weighted vests and now these blankets are being used by adults.

So exactly what is a weighted blanket? It's exactly what it says - a blanket with extra weight in it. This type of blanket is applying deep touch pressure gently and evenly over the body which has many scientifically proven benefits.

The science behind weighted blankets

A 2015 study printed in the Journal of Sleep Medicine and Disorders came to the following conclusion:
The weighted chain blanket used in the present study had a positive impact on sleep, both objectively and subjectively, where a number of physiological and behavioral measures were improved during weighted blanket use. When the participants used the weighted blanket, they had a calmer night’s sleep, with a decrease in movements. Subjectively, they believed that using the blanket provided them with a more comfortable, better quality, and more secure sleep. In conclusion, a weighted blanket may aid in reducing insomnia through increased tactile and proprioceptive inputs, may provide an innovative, nonpharmacological approach and complementary tool to improve sleep quality.
A 2006 study reported:
63% reported lower anxiety after use, and 78% preferred the weighted blanket as a calming modality.
People who use these blankets report getting to sleep quicker, not moving around so much in the night, so not waking as much, having a deeper more refreshing sleep, better focus in the day, being calmer and having less anxiety. The science behind this is that these blankets have been shown to increase serotonin in the body. This chemical occurs widely throughout the body and influences a variety of functions including regulating mood and stimulating the parts of the brain that control sleep and waking.
As well as chemical changes, there are nervous system changes when using weighted blankets. The nervous system calms down when under a heavy blanket. This is a great benefit for people who can’t fall asleep due to anxiety.

What to consider when purchasing a weighted blanket

Find out what the filling is and if it is machine washable. The person selling you the blanket should help you with the correct size and weight for your body.

So if you are interested in finding out more about these weighted wonders or purchasing one please check out the information at Kim's post or go to Amazon where we found the number one best seller in the blanket category. These manufacturer's say "The heavy blanket helps relax the nervous system by simulating the feeling of being held or hugged and make you fall asleep fast and sleep better. It provides great sleep therapy for people with anxiety, autism, ADHD, insomnia or stress."

A LESSON IN BALNEOTHERAPY
Balneotherapy is a natural approach to physical therapy using water and minerals. Dating back centuries, the Greeks and Romans would bathe in mineral-rich hot springs to treat a variety of ailments. It is thought to promote healing by increasing circulation, encouraging detox and easing stress. Today, people all over the world continue to seek out hot springs for a therapeutic soak. In water immersion, the skin’s absorption of the minerals can be considerable, especially with total body immersion. A way to replicate the art of balneotherapy at home is to add mineral-rich salts to your bath.

NECESSARY NUTRIENTS
